(4 feb. 1881, Vierjni, Rusia–2 dic. 1969, Moscú, Rusia, URSS).
Militar y dirigente político soviético. Notable comandante militar en la primera guerra mundial y luego en la guerra civil rusa, dirigió la defensa de Tsaritsin (actual Volgogrado). Estrecho colaborador de
Stalin, fue designado comisario del pueblo para la defensa (1925) y miembro del Politburó (1926). Nombrado mariscal de la Unión Soviética (1935), reorganizó el estado mayor general soviético, mecanizó el ejército y desarrolló su fuerza aérea. Después de las iniciales derrotas soviéticas en la segunda guerra mundial, aunque fue removido como comisario de defensa, lo nombraron comandante del frente norte (1941–44). Luego presidió el Presidium del soviet supremo (1953–57).
